Opéra Ramen — Paris, Opéra

One of numerous Japanese noodle restaurants in the Opéra district of Paris.

23 Boulevard des Capucines

We have our usual addresses for this kind of restaurant but we try and experiment new places, and this one is a little further north, on the Boulevard des Capucines, away from the rest of the restaurant “crowd”. The surroundings are nice, with a few tables on an interestingly placed second floor. We had a couple of noodle soups, one of which was part of a menu with a half curry rice:

The total was 17.80 euros = 9.30 (menu) + 8.50 (noodle soup).

Overall it was a very nice experience. Nothing really outstanding, but definitely slightly above the average in this district. My favorite will still be Naniwa-Ya, which I’ll be writing about in the future!

In a district full with Japanese restaurants, a safe choice for North African cuisine.

Nothing astonishing with this restaurant, it’s a safe bet for a casual lunch if you’re in this district and don’t want to eat Japanese. Of course we couldn’t skip on the couscous, this one is a vegetarian couscous (9.50 euros):

And I took a “Cairo plate” (assiette du Caire, 12 euros):

One thing that’s worth mentioning, I think, is that even though all that’s on the plate was really good (different types of hummus and other creamy things, the two deep fried sticks are filled with cheese), the bread on the side, served hot and fairly soft, turns cold and dry very quickly when taken out of its plastic bag and at this point it’s really just like a large cracker. Better bread would be a notable improvement.

Now I confess that I’m not familiar enough with North African food (though love it!!) to have enough reference points to compare this with, but it seems like an okay choice, nothing astonishing but a fair deal for the price.

Lost among many Japanese restaurants, one that makes good okonomiyaki.

(sorry for the bad picture, some things were under construction).

The menus at lunch time are around 12 – 15 euros, and the photos below show rather classic side dishes along with a pretty good rice dish with pork and eggs, but the one single thing you really need to try is their okonomiyaki, this one with pork:

Now a very good (but more classic) katsudon:

… which comes in a menu with a noodle soup (soba here), also good, but once again the okonomiyaki is the dish to try here:

These two menus come with a few small side dishes:

Pictures from the menu (note that “Déjeuner” means lunch, these menus are probably more expensive in the evening):

Among all the Japanese restaurants in the Opéra district, this one is a pretty good deal.

There’s another instance of it rue Saint-Anne (pretty near) but this one is a bit larger and more comfortable (food is exactly the same). We had the “Katsu Curry Set” (12 euros): pork and curry rice dish,

and miso shiru and salad:

Nothing special with the salad, the miso soup is fine, the curry pork is really nice. Then, a Katsudon (pork & rice, 8.5 euros):

which is pretty good as well, and I found the Gyoza (5.5 euros) in here particularly good:

Update: as we went back there, that time we had a Miso set (10.5 euros): miso soup,

(meat is okay, soup itself tastes great) and Gyoza:

Then, Chukadon set (10.5 euros): lots of different vegetables (plus some meat and calamari) on rice,

and also gyoza.

This is one of my “usuals”, a Japanese “ramen” restaurant. Although the cooker, waitress, boss, etc., are actually Chinese (and very nice) they make pretty good Japanese noodle soups and their sautéed rice is really good.

I didn’t keep the exact prices this time, but a menu (a main dish — noodle soup or rice dish most of the time — with either dumplings or sautéed rice, and tea, hot or ice) is around 10 or 12 euros. I usually like the noodle soup with tofu and pork (plenty of noodles, they’re just hidden down there):

These soups are really big, come with an empty stomach! The noodle soup with sea food and vegetables is also quite good (although I have no doubt that these are frozen shrimps):

The dumplings (gyoza) are not exceptional, but still a bit above average for this kind of restaurant I would say:

However the sautéed rice is particularly good (woops, already took a bite from this one):

We chose hot tea this time (Oolong tea):

Update: a good variation of the tofu & pork soup is… the tofu & pork rice! Pretty much the same dish, rice instead of noodle soup (yes yes there is plenty of rice, it’s just hidden):
