Okay, I just created this small website here :
It is still the very beginning but, well, you get the idea ![]()
So I’d like you guys opinion about this : why do you think Linux is better than other operating systems ? If you have ideas about great features Linux has and others (especially Windows) haven’t, please comment !
PS : for Jeff, my new hackergotchi is here, if you have time to update it, it would be great
Thanks !

My main thing is that its all built on standards… I can use any TV tuner card I want with any TV tuner software I want, I’m not locked into one paticular piece of software. Same with scanners, I hate the scanner utilities for my last 2 scanners on Windows. Same with my wireless connection. And so on.

I’m interested at trying Linux. However, my concerns are the availability of applications that will run on the operating system. Will Adobe Photoshop CS, Premiere etc. run on the system? I would like to receive more information regarding my concern.
Thanks very much.

To be completely honest, I don’t think it is a good idea to say “hey linux is better than , and i can prove it !” because you just can’t prove it. ALL OSes are suitable for a particular task, at a particular moment and for a particular personn.
the fact that linux is better for you (and me, and other peoples as well), does not mean that it is more suitable for *everyone* (eg: it is not suitable for someone needing photoshop, like Gaius)

Hi!
I like the site, and it would also be nice to mention the (still existing) topics where Linux is not better than Windows like software availability or proprietary drivers.

Adobe has released only few software for the Linux Operating System. In particular the ones you are mentioning (Photoshop CS, Premiere) are not available natively under Linux.
I precised natively, because there is a Windows “emulator” (it is under quote because the developer of this product do not regard it as an emulator), it is called Wine: http://www.winehq.com/. However, I have no clew if the mentionned Adobe products run straight forward while using Wine, you might need to dig around Wine’s forum to find out.
In addition, you could try to find Open Source software available under Linux as replacement of the Adobe products. The Gimp could be a replacement of Photoshop CS (even if it does not have all the functionnalities, maybe it is sufficient for what you are doing). Regarding Premiere, I do not know any replacement, because this is not my field of interest. But, perhaps, someone does and will help you find out.

It’a really good idea !
What about a wiki ?
It will be nice if the community is allowed to expand and correct this website !

Really good idea.
But I think the title of the website should rather be: “Why Ubuntu Linux is better”. Because you almost only speak about Ubuntu and Gnome applications (except the page about desktops). Hope not too many Windows users will leave in seeing awful big anti-aliased fonts you use
A few other suggestions:
- do not have to violate licences (you can do anything with free softwares)
- use up-to-date technologies (for example, use the potential of your 64 bits processor)
- don’t have to wait passively for years when you find a bug
- have a better interactions between your apps (with captures of avatars of contacts shared in Kopete and KMail, a kate editor embedded in Konqueror, a drag-and-drop between a image on a website and the desktop (don’t know if it works with Gnome), the embedded wikipedia page in amaroK…)

Thank you all for your comments ! A few notes :
* I thought of the wiki idea, but finally I think I’ll leave it the way it is for three reasons : 1) I don’t know how to setup a wiki
2) A wiki would be really needed for a larger site, but this is still very small (a few dozens of items maximum, and a short text for each of them) and 3) I prefer to choose the “moderated” contribution way, ie I’m listening to *all* comments, and updating the site according to them, but I’d better filter things a bit first.
* I haven’t had time to write new texts yet, but I made a few new items (you can see them on the front page), and I’ll keep reading your comments to add some more. Thanks again
* I added two sections (still empty), the first one will describe the cases where you shouldn’t switch to Linux, the second one will describe what do to if you choose to switch to Linux.
* I also updated a few texts to be more accurate.
* If you find incorrect stuff or typos, don’t hesitate to drop me a mail ! ideas@whylinuxisbetter.net
Cheers

Hi, thanks for making adjustments, it’s really making a lot of progress now
I’ve got some more comments though, and I’d like to share them.
Last time I counted Linux viruses, I found 69. Most of them require an ancient (like 2.2.x or earlier) vulnerability, or require the user to actually play dumb and install an unsigned or signed-but-not-verified package from somewhere outside the usual package sources (like those listed in /etc/apt/sources.list on Debian and derivatives).
Instead of Premiere, you could try Cinelerra, Kino, and perhaps bunch of others.
The hibernate page is now a bit weird. The advantage is only upon Mac OS. But what Mac OS user wants to use another OS, or even *knows* about it in the first place?
In the “Too many windows ?” screenshot, please use a coloured box instead of a black one. That would make it much more clear. Maybe red.
I don’t know you’ve seen this, but here it is (again) anyway:

Yes, that’s ubuntu asking me to reboot. Apparantly the kernel I was running got removed, but that’s because I had upgraded Breezy to Dapper. It wouldn’t normally happen otherwise.
But yes, installing stuff from add/remove never requires a reboot. Also third party apps like VMware don’t require it. Show me a Windows box that doesn’t ask to reboot after installing a (almost mandatory now with it’s security center) virus scanner (except clamwin),
…dehibernating the next day…
Adobe Reader (the utter sillyness), VMware, etc. I even once administered a Windows Server 2003 complete with Active Directory and all that, and Word Viewer was installed for Terminal Services users. However, for some reason (I can’t remember) it needed to be removed, and the uninstaller wanted to reboot! Can you imagine? A server that runs the business needs to reboot because Word Viewer got removed? Now *thats* insane. We would’ve needed to promote the member server to a domain controller. Instead we just waited ’til the end of the day.
And about the weather, I use gDesklets to place it on the background, looks great.
Also be cautious when showing features of both KDE and Gnome, because visitors reading your website will want *all* those features, and not just the ones in either of the 2 desktops.
And why “the few cases you should to stick to windows”? I really see no reason at all. If some hardware component doesn’t work, it can be replaced. If some software application doesn’t work, it can either be replaced, rewritten, or it the program is plain bad and should be avoided. “But I *need* this!” no you don’t, you need something that can do what you’re doing with it, or you should not do what you were doing at all (some spyware programs somehow are addictive to some, very strange, but then, a lot of people are ignorant and oblivious, blame their parents :p )
Also mention that the gratis VMware Player can run Windows (if they have a license) under GNU/Linux, and vice-versa.

Agreed with the first part of what Fred said. Saying “Why Linux is better” is like saying “Why Pratt & Whitney is better”: it’s very vague, and even if it’s true it’s unlikely to affect your buying choices unless you’re a big company or a geek.
What would be interesting is comparing an actual Linux-based operating system (such as Ubuntu) against Windows XP and Mac OS X, in all the same ways that http://xvsxp.com/ does.

Really sorry for all the comments that haven’t been moderated until today. The fact is I have already had some bad experience when not filtering comments, but now that I filter them, I need to actually remember to check them out from time to time
Sorry again, I’ll read them all, answer you in a private mail if needed, and improve the whylinuxisbetter.net website according to your suggestions (it’s already evolved quite a bit, you should check it out !).
