New Ubuntu blogger around

I’ve been approved as an Ubuntu member about a month ago and I was just added to the planet, so I thought I’d write a first post to say hello )

In Ubuntu, I’m mainly working with the Desktop Team, and I’m the one responsible for this :

Add to panel dialog

and for this :

Logout dialog

(among other things). So if you have rants about these two dialogs, you now know whom to shout at )
Ok, that was basically my “hello world”, I’ll soon be posting (hopefully) more interesting stuff !

This new logout/shutdown panel is a huge step back in my opinion. You’re guys trying to oversimplify “System” menu. What is the benefit of combining Lock, Logout and Shutdown menu items? These are clearly very different actions. Having them all is in my opinion very clean and logical solution. Right now your dialog combines actions that shouldn’t be mixed. There is SEVEN of them! And what about accidentaly pressing Shutdown instead of Lock?? What about my work that I wanted to finish in a few minutes? It’s wrong, very wrong. It doesn’t look good either. Previous one was looking very professional and your looks more like lolly-pop.

I hope Ubuntu, as well as Gnome, will stay with “sane defaults”. Your logout/shutdown/kitchen-sink dialog isn’t a sane default.

So you’re the one to throw the rocks at for that abysmal logout dialog. Hmmm.

What do you know about the bizarre text-alignment bug in the add-to-panel window? (Try mousing over one of the longer-named items .)

I would also like to thank you for the “add to panel” dialog. There is a lot of information there and it’s presented in a very clear manner! As to the logout dialog, I think that one should be able to guess the function of each icon. The top three pass this test, the bottom 4 don’t. For example, “sleep” should have a computer with “zzzz” or something. I know you have have text underneath, but why have an icon if it doesn’t provide any information.

  4. heyas all.
my 40 gig drive is going to good use now. I have installed UBUNTU and have ordered KUBUNTU.
I dont know how to install the driver for my ati radeon 9600xt.
Actually i dont know if i am meant to be downloading and installing XFREE86 or the XORG version of the driver. I am downloading them both but i dont know how to do anything in Linux really.
I dont know where I am meant to set up my modem or set up a net account. (no INETWIZ.EXE)
So yeah, can someone help me out with getting my ATI driver installed?
and does anyone know of a good long PDF file i can read and wrap my brain around.
I’m still a Windows user, but I want to use Linux as much as possible.
    Thanks. :)
